Gilt Medals

Below is an alphabetical list of the GILT medals from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition that we have observed to date, preceded by their assigned Pan-American Census Project catalog number. Please note the definite article (The) has been placed at the end of the name when shown on the medal in order to maintain alphabetical order.

A note about Gilt medals: The art of gold plating bronze medals (gilded, ormolu, pomponne) creates a medal that looks and has a heft similar to gold at a fraction of the cost of solid gold. The gilded bronze medals of the 1901 Pan-American Exposition were likely the highest level awarded (bronze, silver, gilt). Gilt medals will read “BRONZE” on the edge (see below), as well as “GORHAM CO.” and possibly a serial number. There are only two solid gold medals known. They read “24K” on the edge. These were likely a special option offered to those who won a gilt medal, paid for at the winner’s expense.
